The transition from gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) is happening with lightning speed. Automakers are planning to invest $330 billion in electrification by 2025, and IHS Markit predicts there will be 130 EV models available in the U.S. by 2026. The federal government has established an aggressive goal of 40-50% of all new vehicle sales to be EVs by the end of this decade and California is moving toward a 100% EV sales requirement in 2035. Although consumer interest continues to grow, EVs still only made up roughly 4 percent of all new vehicle sales in 2021. Meeting these EV goals and targets will require action by a broad range of stakeholders, and the growth of EVs in our states’ will give rise to many issues that will require you, as a legislator, to address in the coming legislative sessions.
To help you prepare to address these policy issues the Institute has partnered with the Alliance for Automotive Innovation to present a seminar on EVs exclusively for state legislators to learn about the basics of electric vehicle policy and how to build a comprehensive state eco system for an electrified future. The EV seminar will provide a balanced program covering a broad range of issues and will feature some of the leading voices in the electrification arena. This seminar will enable you to equip yourself with the information needed to tackle important emerging EV policy issues, enable you to share best practices with your colleagues from other states and provide a forum for you to ask all the important questions, including perhaps: where do I even begin?
